What people can't seem to understand is that there is always a breakup that you can't get over. It becomes part of us. It stays in the deepest place of our minds, slowly eating us out. It changes us, for better or for worse. Ultimately, it defines us, for the rest of our lives.
For some, they tried to dance with it. They go out there, rationalizing and treating that breakup like it's just another piece of luggage. But for some, it breaks them. The heart died, along with their belief in love. They become devoid of emotions.
For the broken, it is hard to fall in love, impossible even. To resurrect their heart so that they can feel once more, knowing that there is a possibility for them to bleed all over again...that would be a very tall order. For them, their time has stopped since that life-changing event. That's why, everything that comes after is just an extra.
With that kind of mindset, they never let themselves fall too deep in their future relationship(s). They may like others, but not love. They may be intimate with their significant others, but never assimilate. They keep giving less and less part of themselves...
...and that's just too sad.
